The Sudoma Mountain

The nature monument is located in the territory of Dedovichi district, 29 km south-west of the district center, to the west of the Podsudomskoye Lake. The area is 615 hectares.

It has the highest mark of the Sudoma Upland (293 m above the sea level). Above the lowlands, the mountain rises up to 120 meters.

According to one of the legends, the name of the mountain of Sudoma is associated with the word "court". The legend says that the mountain was the seat of the court, which was carried out with the help of a chain hanging from the sky. The chain was given only to the hands of right, but one day with the help of deceit, the guilty one took it into his hands, and the chain disappeared. This legend formed the basis of the tale of Leo Tolstoy's "Sudoma".

The formation of the elevation is associated with an increased accumulation of morainic material in the zone of the dynamic ice break between Pskovsko-Velikoretskaya and Lovat glacial lobes. The mountain of Sudoma belongs to the central part of the upland, it is expressed in the form of a shaft-like uplift.

Mount Sudoma with the adjacent scenic landscape is a unique, irreplaceable natural complex. The landscape of the natural monument has a scientific, aesthetic, historical value

The nature monument was declared a specially protected natural area of regional importance in 1995.
